COMMON CAUSES OF COMPUTER FAILURE

In the previous article we published, we shared with you some ways to take care of your computer. Sad to say that, regardless of the make or model of your computer it may still encounter issues. Thankfully, these issues can usually be easily repaired.

In this article, we’ll share the common issues that we have encountered and some basic troubleshooting steps to apply.

COMMON COMPUTER ISSUES and HOW TO FIX THEM:

1. Hardware components (mouse, keyboard, printer, etc)

  • Check your hardware first for any signs of physical damage.
    • If found, repair or replace the damaged item.
  • Check the ports where you are plugging the peripherals, there should be no blockage such as dust or dirt.
    • If found, repair use proper techniques to remove blockages and clean ports.

2. Internet is running slow

  • Check your internet connection.
    • Check the lights on your modem to make sure you’re connected.
    • Resetting your modem is a good place to start if the lights aren’t green.
  • Verify that correct cables are attached on your computer.
    • If not, attach cables correctly.
  • Run a speedtest.
    • There are many websites that allow you to do this for free.
  • Contact your ISP to check on your internet remotely.

3. App/s is not loading or opening

  • Check if app is properly run and installed.
    • Reinstall if needed.
  • Restart your computer and re-open the app.
  • Force stop the app and re-run.

4. Computer suddenly shuts down

  • Check your power supply.
    • See if other devices plugged in are still working.
  • Check if your computer’s air ventilation.
    • Check for, and clean, any dust or debris.
  • Go to your computer Settings, Open Power Options and change the setting.
    • Check with your managed service professional for your optimum settings.

5. Blue screen of death

  • This could be due to recent update, device driver or recent hardware adjustment. It can also indicate that a malicious app has been installed.
  • Isolate the issue by checking if the recent software update was properly installed. Verify the recent app you have installed and try to uninstall it.
  • If due to installed hardware, shut down your computer and remove the hardware.

6. Computer restarting by itself

  • This could be a hardware failure or unstable system.
  • Have your hardware check –
    • Internal hardware (hard drive, Graphic card, RAM)
    • External hardware – check for signs of overheating

7. Unable to open files or attachments

  • This issue depends on what type of file is not opening.
  • Check if the file is correctly saved.
  • Check if the app where you’re opening the file is updated.
  • Make a copy of the file externally and open it.

8. Graphic error

  • Check your graphic card’s physical condition.
  • Check if you have the latest display drivers.
  • Check your computer’s air ventilation.
  • Re-attach graphic card, shut down and re-open your computer.

9. Unable to download apps from the internet

  • Check your internet connection.
  • Clear the temporary internet files.
  • Shut down and restart your computer.
  • Re-download the app.

10. Computer freezes

  • Shut down and restart your computer.
  • Check power supply.
  • Check if there’s no sign of overheating.

Computer issues vary, and how difficult they are to fix often depends on the severity of the cause. There are computer issues that can be easily diagnosed and repaired quickly.
